Photographing London Fashion Weekend 2013

Blog

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the catwalk models at London Fashion Weekend 2013!

Thanks to Calumet and Canon UK I won the opportunity to photograph the catwalk models at the Vodafone London Fashion Weekend 2013. This was an amazing opportunity for me (and around 25 other photographers in my group) to see the world of fashion "up close" and from the same perspective as the Pro fashion photographers.

We were photographing the Trend Show, which gives the public an overview of the season's key trends.  This season's trends were (are?!) Graphic Art, Urban Lifestyle, Eastern Promise and Dolls House. You can follow these links or use the links on the right to look at my photo galleries for each trend. (There are a few "general" shots below too)

We photographed two runs of the same show and you will be able to see that I changed position between the two shows.

Next time (!):

  • A longer lens would be a good idea - on a full-frame camera, 200mm is the bare minimum to be able to "get close" to the models.  A few of the pictures I've posted here are very tight crops of the original photos.
  • That said, with a wider lens you can still get good photos of the models provided that they do their bit and "pose" for the cameras.  Some of our models did, some didn't, and I think it's possible to tell the difference in the final photos.
  • Take a bottle of water.  It gets warm.
  • Get there early.  Your ability to get good shots is largely dependent on your position in the photographer's pit.

Lots of fun!

(PS Look out for the moustaches in the Urban Lifestyle gallery)
